Katmai Engineer/ Scientist II (Database Developer) in MOBILE, Alabama

SUMMARY

Supports the ongoing development of new features, testing, documentation and service of existing functionality for Reachback Engineer Data integration (REDi) and other applications critical to the USACE Reachback Operations Center (UROC) mission. Provides analysis and problem resolution of communications systems, mechanisms and architectures.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support development of specifications and technical documentation such as system design documentation to support development efforts.

  • Work with users to identify and resolve application issues by corrective actions.

  • Design, develop, test, and deploy the external web application front- end using modern web technologies.

  • Participate in code and peer reviews, backlog refinement, demo, sprint planning, and daily standup meetings.

  • SQL Server database administration, performance monitoring and hardware/software.

  • Create data graphing tools to generate time series plots of data, including dynamic range and scale capabilities.

  • Use data from project databases to create graphical project summaries, construction status reports and other project tracking tools.

  • Conduct system wide technical needs analysis, as well as researching, analyzing, and evaluating existing systems infrastructure for performance and compliance.

  • Create new site lists and document libraries needed for storing data within the SharePoint Architecture for managing new project data and attachments.

  • Review and identify gaps and variances in the architecture, design, and implementation of system components across a complex enterprise-wide architecture.

  • Create Standard Operating Procedure documentation for designs and implementation strategies of new hardware and software deployments. Address requirements for maintaining system security and completing Certification and Accreditation documentation for approval.

  • Install, configure, and maintain network services and equipment to include switches, load balancers and Firewalls.

  • Manage all system back-ups and restore protocols to include front end back-ups.

  • Design, implement, and manage storage area network environments utilizing medium and enterprise level storage solutions.

  • Provide network hardware and software upgrades as needed.

  • Prepare monthly reports summarizing performance toward objectives.

  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in an applicable discipline. In lieu of degree, relevant work experience may be substituted on a year for year basis.

  • Minimum of five (5) years professional engineering and scientific experience in design, development, documentation and operation of computer systems, software and databases employing specialized database development tools for application to ERDC systems.

  • Must have or able to obtain CompTIA Security Plus certification.

  • Knowledge of database design (best practices and standards)

  • Experience in planning and delivering software platforms used across multiple products and organizational units.

  • Experience with database security/encryption

  • Experience with extracting and/or loading data (SSRS, SSIS)

  • Functional knowledge or hands on design experience with Web Services

  • Experience with DevOps platform, working closely with developers, IT security experts, and product managers to improve the overall developer experience.

  • Familiar with a variety of the concepts, practices, and procedures within a project’s technical field.

  • Experience with some or all the following front-end technologies

  • HTML/XHTML and CSS/SCSS

  • JavaScript/TypeScript

  • Angular

  • SharePoint

  • Experience with some or all the following back-end technologies

  • C#/.NET

  • Python

  • NodeJS

  • Knowledge of current modeling and simulation principles, techniques, processes, regulations, and policies.

  • Knowledge of software acquisition management, software development methodologies and software engineering processes.

  • Expertise in applying current and evolving engineering technologies.

  • Ability to provide technical advice on the conceptual design of simulators, training, and instrumentation systems required to support complex equipment or systems.

  • Ability to execute complex, multi-faceted projects within established financial and time constraints.

  • Working knowledge of all phases of computer system design and computer software acquisition management.

  • Working knowledge of telecommunications and networking standards, architectures, protocols, and systems as it applies to training devices, simulation, simulators and instrumentation.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of software architecture and object modeling, domain engineering and software engineering processes as it applies to training/testing devices, simulations, simulators, and instrumentation.

  • Comprehensive knowledge in software quality assurance and SCM as applied to the software life cycle development process.

  • Ability to understand user requirements, develop effective solutions, solve end user’s needs

  • Must have or able to obtain a valid secret security clearance. (U.S. citizenship required).

  • Must obtain and maintain any necessary security access and/or background checks.

Job Requirements:

WORK SCHEDULE

Full-time. May be required to work additional hours as needed to complete assignment or project.

TRAVEL

Potential for travel. When required, employee will need to complete an MVR check.

DRIVING REQUIREMENTS

Must have or be able to attain a valid state driver’s license and be insurable on the company’s automobile insurance policy. Driving, with or without accommodation, may be required when traveling for training and/or short occasional amounts of local driving. The expected driving time is less than 25%.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed in a hybrid setting. Employee will work remotely and, in an office setting in Mobile, AL. Employee will be exposed to a wide variety of people in differing functions, personalities, and abilities.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Position consists of sitting for long periods of time, using hands/fingers, handling, reaching with hands and arms, talking, hearing, seeing, and occasional walking or standing, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, and lifting boxes weighing up to 30 pounds. Moderate to extended periods of office work with heavy periods of computer usage.
